Boys

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 12 years, 10 months ago

The following are from PUBYAC contributors. If you're a member check out the archives for 6-9-2011.

  • Chess Clubs
  • Wrestling-theme party--we just did a few games, they “designed”-or created their own wrestler, (make a paper-doll like template). The cupcakes, however, were definitely the stars of that program!
  • Dangerous Club (ages 8+) and a Dangerous Club Junior (5-8)  We use the Dangerous Book for Boys as our inspirations and run it in 6 week session throughout the year. The program has included making a rocket launcher, volcanoes, dangerous animals, medieval times, air plane contests, science experiments, dangerous weather, making slime, and a snowball throwing contests.
  • Science programs go over huge here. Hands on and messy work best.
  • Grossology.
  • Cartooning classes....just use the step by step books to train yourself and run with it your only teaching the basics.
  • Video gaming is a staple now days but also take a look at downloading some of the multiplayer games onto your public internet computers and sponsoring a tournament.
  • Parties that tie into high interest boy books—Diary of a Wimpy Kid; Captain Underpants and Percy Jackson. Wimpy Kid Bingo program that went over well with both boys and girls
  • Paper boomerang programs.
  • Plain white toy race cars from Oriental Trading--color them with permanent markers, make jumps and obstacles out of discarded books and craft supplies, and race them in our program room. We used non-fiction books about cars and racing to get design ideas.
  • Talk Like a Pirate Day which is September 19. There is a website that includes some ideas for kids: http://www.talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html.
  • Get in touch with a local Dojo and put together a program on the story of that style of martial arts and cap it off with demos from the Sensai and his students.
  • Lego Club
  • Pizza tasting from local pizza places. You limit it to mostly boys by saying, they have to eat the whole piece of each pizza. They get a chart on the best sauce, the best cheese, the best toppings....then they have to write a couple of sentences on the best all over pizza.
  • Make your own sundae planning party.
  • A coloring contest of all  the latest robots for 1st to 3rd grade....Enlarge pages of Dragon Ball Z, or whatever your older kids prefer.
