Curious George

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 6 years, 4 months ago

Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from a PUBYAC contributor. If you're a member, check out the archives for 7-6-2007. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!

CURIOUS GEORGE, by H.A. Rey

b. September 16, 1898

d. August 26, 1977

INVITATIONS:

  • Suggested for 4-7 year olds

DRESS:

  • Jungle safari attire, if possible

REFRESHMENTS:

FAVORS/CRAFTS:

  • Monkey Puppets
  • Monkey Masks
  • Banana Necklaces
  • Kites
  • Newspaper boats
  • Curious George Bookmarks
  • Paper Pizza (Curious George and the Pizza Party) -- May also be made out of felt.

GAMES:

  • Pass the banana, (like hot potato), where the kids passed around a plastic banana and when the music stopped they're supposed to stand up and act like a monkey.
  • Feed George--a cut-out of George, bean bags are thrown into his open mouth

  • Beanbags can be made from removing the tiles in a Bananagram Game and stuffing with regular bean bags or soft fill.
  • Pin the...
    • hat, on the Man with the Yellow Hat
    • banana on the tree
  • Peel the Banana Camp Song
  • Monkey See, Monkey Do-- Invite your guests to form a circle, and have one child be the leader inside the circle. Play upbeat music and have the leader come up with silly dance moves, and actions for the rest of the group to follow. Change leaders every one or two minutes, so that everyone has a chance to lead. OR, play it as a game similar to Simon Says.

PROGRAM:

  • Read a book
  • Let the children go to various stations to complete crafts
  • Have plenty of word searches and coloring sheets on hand as the children work their way through the stations
  • Games can be played once the group reassembles
  • Have refreshments

TIME:

  • About an hour-and-a-half should be sufficient.
