Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from a PUBYAC contributor. If you're a member, check out the archives for 6-2010. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!

INVITATIONS:
DRESS:
REFRESHMENTS: see: Recipes for Storytime
- Have a smoothie bar with three different flavors, complete with drink umbrellas.
Each person got one smoothie (in a 3 oz. Dixie cup).
DECORATIONS:
CRAFTS/FAVORS:
- Leis
- Scuba Masks
- Seashell Necklaces
GAMES/ACTIVITIES:
- Welcome packet with a word scramble, a beverage ticket, and an entry form for the prize drawing.
- Then, teach a basic hula step to everyone as a group (YouTube rocks!) and dance to Hawaiian music (a CD we have in the library system).
- Play Musical Sunglasses--The kids sat in a circle facing each other, and they passed around a bucket of sunglasses while Hawaiian music played. Whoever was holding the bucket when the music stopped put on a pair of sunglasses, and we repeated until all of the sunglasses (11 pair) were spoken for.
- Program participants visited different stations:
- An inner-tube toss (they tried to hook a swim ring on a coat tree peg),
- lei-making (string paper flowers [there is an Ellison die cut] and drinking straws on a length of yarn),
- pin the flower on Junie B. Jones (a clerk enlarged a picture of Junie B. on our photocopier and we used Hibiscus flower clip art cutouts).rize drawing. Another librarian donated some Junie B.
There were prize drawings for paperbacks, some stuffed Ponyos, and the grand prize was a duffel bag stuffed with some fabric flower leis from the local dollar store, crazy straws, raspberry-lemonade drink mix, an inexpensive pair of sunglasses, and a beach towel.
