Teaching about Dewey Numbers:

I have tried (with 3rd-4th graders) spreading out a bunch of non-fiction books on the carpet (more than enough for the number of students), and asking everyone to choose one they like. I tell them to write the first 3 numbers of their Dewey number - using their spine labels - on a post it note on the front of their book. Then I get them to line up in exact Dewey order, in a sort of 3/4 arc of a circle, so they can all see each other, but they're basically in a line. Then they can see which topics are near which other topics, like how all the Sports books are clumped together, and how Pet books are near Cooking... You could do it in 15 minutes, if you have an attentive, focused group.
