Here are early childhood literacy programs being offered in Monroe County Libraries.

Irondequoit Public Library has developed a parent-education program called "Let's Get Ready to Read", funded by a New York State Ed. Department Family Literacy Services grant. Modeled after ALA's "Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library", our program provides education for parents and caregivers of children aged birth-5 on the 6 skills children need before they can be ready to read. Our training sessions include an introductory power-point presentation for the adults, followed by from 1-3 interactive sessions for the adult and their child. These play literacy sessions model for parents/caregivers ways to incorporate the 6 emergent literacy skills into their child's everyday life activities. We also have developed circulating literacy kits for 3 age levels (birth-23 months, 2 & 3, 4 & 5) which contain several books, a music CD, a toy, and a booklet describing the 6 skills, and specific ways that each of the kit contents can be used to furthur the child's proficiency with the skills.
