The wearing of name tags helps everyone feel part of the group and also reinforces memory of people’s names!

Registration recommended but not required.  Registration guarantees that children have name tags waiting for them in storytime and helps give a general idea of how many people are interested in attending. Ask participants to arrive 10-15 minutes early so they have ample time to get settled. When the child enters the library, ask "Are you here for storytime?"

  • Know your children's names. Knowing the names of the children who come to your story hour will help engage the children and eliminate some of the annoying distractions that sometimes arise.
  • Name tags – work best with a pre-registered group.
  • Name tags are a good way to enhance “Print Awareness.”
  • Presenter can use name tags to help children understand letters. Letter Awareness--comment on the sounds, or on the shapes the letters.
  • You may want to use name tags for adults and children.
  • Have the children decorate a simple name tag--set out construction paper squares, tape, crayons, stickers…
  • You could have a volunteer create tags for the entire “session” to be picked up before each storytime.
  • Have the volunteer create a few extra blank tags for those just dropping in for the day or keep a roll of disposable name tags for this purpose.
  • Name tags can be elaborate cutouts in the shape of an icon from the day’s theme or they can be simple rectangles, perhaps decorated with stamped or photocopied art.
  • Name tags can be as simple as stapling names onto pieces of ribbon and use with safety pins.
