I agree that avoiding judgement and shame is best--you are astute to predict that a patron may have extenuating circumstances.

  • I suggest starting discussions. (This saves you from passing judgement, but allows you to slip in some unsolicited advice while keeping your patron receptive and you helpful.)
  • "Tell me more about the kind of video you're looking for, is this going to be watched as a family, or by the child independently?"
  • "Independently? Great, have you guys tried this before? (Obviously you have to alter the patter for various age ranges.)
  • Here's the book version of this film. First you read it together and make Johnny the detective: Ask him to figure out which parts of the book they put in the film and which ones they left out. He can watch the film while you pay the bills, and then, at dinnertime he presents his report..."
  • I'd recommend sing-along songs and videos that were more age-level instructional, (Baby Einstein, Sesame Street, etc.)
