INVITATIONS:

  • Suggested for ages 5-9 years

DRESS:

  • Headbands with ears (wolf suit)
  • Have your guests dress as a "wild thing."
  • Bugles, (the snack food), can go on the finger tips as claws
  • Crowns could be handed out at the end of the party

REFRESHMENTS:

FAVORS/CRAFTS:

  • Sailboat craft
  • Crowns—paper or foam, add jewels, decorations
  • Make a Forest Diorama
  • Wild Things--Clay Creatures--Talk textures and patterns
  • Monster drawings, or puppets
  • Mobile--boat, tree, bed, "Wild Thing," crown
  •  Max or Bernard--(see below)

GAMES/ACTIVITIES:

  • Make a Rumpus—“roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.” AND freeze when the music stops.
  • Horns, Fangs, Tails and Claws (variation of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)

PROGRAM:

  • Read the book
  • What would your “WILD THING” look like?
  • Would your mythical creature have a special power?
  • How did Max know just how to tame the "Wild Things?"
  • Would you stay if you were king of all "Wild Things?"
  • What would you miss most about your home?
  • Have plenty of coloring sheets and word searches while the children go through the various stations.
  • When the children have reassembled have them play games
  • Serve your refreshments

VOLUNTEERS:

  • If dealing with younger children, have plenty of help on hand. You can encourage the parent(s) to stay, as this book really is about the parent-child relationship.

TIME:

  • About an hour to an hour-and-a-half should be sufficient.
