WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, by Maurice Sendak

INVITATIONS:
- Suggested for ages 5-9 years
DRESS:
- Headbands with ears (wolf suit)
- Have your guests dress as a "wild thing."
- Bugles, (the snack food), can go on the finger tips as claws
- Crowns could be handed out at the end of the party
REFRESHMENTS:
FAVORS/CRAFTS:
- Sailboat craft
- Crowns—paper or foam, add jewels, decorations
- Make a Forest Diorama
- Wild Things--Clay Creatures--Talk textures and patterns
- Monster drawings, or puppets
- Mobile--boat, tree, bed, "Wild Thing," crown
- Max or Bernard--(see below)
GAMES/ACTIVITIES:
- Make a Rumpus—“roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.” AND freeze when the music stops.

Horns, Fangs, Tails and Claws (variation of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)
PROGRAM:
- Read the book
- What would your “WILD THING” look like?
- Would your mythical creature have a special power?
- How did Max know just how to tame the "Wild Things?"
- Would you stay if you were king of all "Wild Things?"
- What would you miss most about your home?
- Have plenty of coloring sheets and word searches while the children go through the various stations.
- When the children have reassembled have them play games
- Serve your refreshments
VOLUNTEERS:
- If dealing with younger children, have plenty of help on hand. You can encourage the parent(s) to stay, as this book really is about the parent-child relationship.
TIME:
- About an hour to an hour-and-a-half should be sufficient.
