Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from Janie Hermann, Programming Librarian Interest Group, FaceBook site. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!
I have mentioned this term a few times in my posts, so I thought I would explain what I mean as it is a fun, easy and free program: Book Filibuster.
We do a filibuster annually to kick off our summer reading.
We choose a book that ties in to the theme and we recruit staff, volunteers, local celebrities, etc. to take turns reading aloud from it for 15 minute slots.
We set up in our lobby and start reading at 9 am.... we usually end in the late afternoon.
People will stop and listen for 5 minutes or some will stay for several hours.
If the book has a movie, we screen it that night.
We have done a filibuster of Harry Potter, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Watson's go to Birmingham and a few others.
We do look for unabridged audio versions to help us gauge time.
