Libraries are more than books. I gleaned the following from a STORYTIME UNDERGROUND (FB) contributor. If you're a member, check out the archives for 10-12-2017. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!
1. Have the children each bring in two gently-used books, one wrapped and one unwrapped.
2. Play a quick game of passing around the wrapped books. (Put it to music)
3. Or do a Left-Right story, or more. (Here is one, but there are others on the internet.)
4. When you are sure that the books are pretty mixed up, have the children unwrap their new book.
5. The unwrapped ones can be used to be swapped out, if someone already owns their new unwrapped book. Leftovers can be donated to a nursery school or homeless shelter.
OR
1. Have the children bring in gently-used books one week. Give a ticket for each book donated. (You might want to place a cap on the number donated.)
2. The following week, children bring back their tickets and for each ticket handed in, choose from the selection of donated materials.
3. Left-overs can hang around another week, just in case someone wants to trade-in. And after three weeks, leftovers get donated to a nursery school or homeless shelter.
