Storytime Template

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 3 years, 3 months ago

When you start storytimes, work off a template. Each page can cover a theme,* that can be placed into a three-ring binder. You may want to place the pages in top-loading sheet protectors, so you can add extra information or props behind the theme page. I wouldn't presume to tell you how to set up your template BUT rather than reinventing the wheel, a template will help you focus and make life easier for you and your colleagues. You may prefer to save your work electronically but I've found it easier to have a paper copy.

Here are some considerations:

  • Date
  • Theme
  • Early Literacy Tip
  • Opening Song
  • Books
  • Fingerplays/Poems
  • Puppet/Props
  • Flannel Board/Story-to-Cut/Story-to-Draw
  • Song Cube/Marching/Action Song
  • Bubbles/Parachute
  • Closing Song
  • Craft--if applicable
  • STEM/STEAM--if applicable

Person presenting program

* To theme, or not to theme, is YOUR choice. If you choose NOT to theme, you'll have to decide how you file your templates--Chronologically? Or by individual? I've found themes to work for me...'though I don't use them all the time.

(Winton) Storage:

  • Fingerplays are stored in embroidery thread storage boxes, or Hot Wheel boxes.
  • Flannel board stories are filed alphabetically in plastic folders, with the story on the outside.
  • Themes are in top-loading plastic covers, (where poems, stencils, recipes and more can be easily added), and placed in 3-ring binders.
  • Realia items are broken down by themes and if they don't fit into a plastic sleeve to be filed under specific theme in above notebooks, then the items are placed in boxes on storage shelves in stacks. This would include: games, food, farm, jungle (zoo) and pets, musical instruments and more.
  • Hand stamps are in a box, (no order).
  • Puppets are in a large big zip-lock bag. (no order)
  • Summer Reading prizes are in a cooler that's been transformed to look like a treasure chest. Extras going on a shelf.
