Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing.
You can use the following for school age children or young adults. Some of the guessing games came from baby showers and some, from my Recreation kids. Others, I gleaned from PUBYAC contributors. If you're a member, check out the archives for 2/2011. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't! Some of these lend themselves to "passive programming" more than others. Tweak until you're comfortable with the material.

- A leader stands facing the group and on the count of 3, everybody makes a gesture representing one animal. Anybody matching the leader sits down and you repeat until 1 person is left. They get to be the next leader. (Storytime Underground FB)

- Place blank sheets on your end-caps with a specific color on each sheet, then have a table with old magazines, scissors and glue on it along with instructions to find pictures that match the colors, and glue the pictures to the corresponding color. (Storytime Underground FB 8-2017)

- For estimating activities, pile up books and tie a ribbon around them. Have children guess the total number of pages — the winner receives a book. (FLYP 7-2011)
