Games are a great way to break up or end storytime. Be mindful of the ages of the children participating in the games. Smaller groups can be more manageable, so it may work better to have stations. Though some games you have to include a large number. What works for YOU? How much room do you have?

  • Animal Races (bunny hop, crab/elephant walk, leap frog)
  • Balloon Toss (be mindful of latex allergies)
  • Bubble Blowing 
  • Clothespin Drop 
  • Copy Cat Dance

  • Drinking Straw Throw
  • Duck, Duck, Goose
  • Farmer in the Dell
  • Flapjack Frenzy -- frying pan, spatula, hot pad/flapjack. Child must flip hot pad/flapjack into the air & land it in the pan.

  • Galaxy Relay -- a star has been named for each one of you. Find your star in the galaxy & bring it back to Earth.  
  • Get the Beat
  • Hawk & Hens (outdoor is best but set boundaries)

  • Mother May I?
  • Mouse & Cheese (Take-off on musical chairs. The kids sit in a circle and pass the cheese around while the music plays. When it stops, the child with the cheese passes it to the next child and sits in the middle.)
  • Musical Blanket (co-operative--blanket is folded after every pause; and children end up sitting on each others laps.)
  • Nose Ball

  • One-in-Twenty
  • Paper Bag Throw
  • Paper Plate Discus Throw
  • Penny Toss (Use a large container of water, in the middle submerge a smaller bowl. Try to get the penny into the smaller bowl.)
  • Puddle Jump--Outline a puddle with yarn or string, try jumping across
  • Raucous Races--backwards, sideways, on your knees, blindfolded, crab race
  • Red-Light; Green Light
  • Relay Races
  • Ring-Around-the Rosie
  • Ring Toss -- Paper plates with their centers cut out. Use pennies taped around the edges to give it weight. Use a kitchen chair leg as your goal.
  • Rock, Paper Scissors
  • Simon Says/Sensei Says
  • Sharks & Minnows (another outdoor game)
  • Statues
  • Steal the Bacon (another outdoor game)
  • Tag (another outdoor game BUT where everybody's "it," When you get tagged you have to crouch down but you're back in the game when the person who tagged you gets tagged. Rock, paper scissors settles all ties.)
  • Telephone (Gossip)
  • 20 Questions
  • Yes, and Move On
