Gingerbread House Cookies

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 9 years, 1 month ago

Gingerbread House refers to the candy decoration, NOT the taste of the cookies being prepared!

1. Prepare sugar cookie dough according to package.

2. On a well floured surface, roll half of dough out into a rectangle, 3/16" thick. use pizza cutter to cut 2-3/4" X 3 3/4" rectangles.

3. Repeat same for remaining cookie dough.

4. Dip spatula into flour and carefully place sugar cookie rectangles on cookie sheet. Bake as directed on package. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool slightly on cookie sheet. Carefully remove from cookie sheet and place on cookie rack to cool completely.

5. Decorate the cookies:  Spread frosting over entire cookie. Add a few drops of food coloring to frosting, if desired; mix thoroughly.

6. For roof, cut a 1/2" angle from wafer cookies and press onto top of cookie.

7. For door, remove wrapping from chocolate mint and press onto center bottom of cookie.

8. For doorknob, use toothpick and frosting to "paste" fruit candy on door.

9. Decorate the rest of the house as desired with chocolate chips, M&M's and other small candy's.

                    OR

1. Spread frosting on graham crackers.

2. Decorate using steps 5 - 9 above.

From a PUBYAC contributor 12-15-2008:

  • If you're doing this as a program--require registration.
  • Estimate 1 one can of vanilla frosting for every 5-7 participants.
  • Use popsicle sticks to dig the frosting out of the containers and to spread it onto the graham crackers.  Be generous, you want the materials to stick. (Remind the kids to keep their fingers out of the frosting container.)
  • Be sure to cover your table, and have plenty of wet and dry towels nearby to wipe sticky fingers.
  • Try to prepackage everything except the frosting and graham crackers before you get started, so everyone has about the same amount of candy and other supplies
