Libraries and Books

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 1 year, 10 months ago

Oh, how I love it when you read to me,

Read to me, read to me.

Oh, how I love it when you read to me,

Please read to me some more.

          --Mary Jo Pattison

Read, read, read a book

Travel anywhere.

Worldwide, you decide

A book will take you there.

Read, read, read a book

Beginning to the end.

What a way to spend the day,

A book's a special friend

Children are made readers on the laps

Of their parents.

          --Emilie Buchwald

I like to look inside a book,

Where all the picture people look.

And look at them, I want to see,

If they are looking back at me.

A safari into Africa

An expedition to the Pole

A voyage on the Seven Seas

A search to find your soul.

These trips you start with just a look

Between the covers of a book.

Unwind the web of Mystery

Sail on a cruise with Chance.

Probe the twisted maze of Fear

Or journey with Romance.

All these are done with Youth and Age

With just the turning of a page.

          --Janet Berry

Story stew, story stew,

We're going to make a story stew. (pretend to stir)

Story stew, story stew,

There'll be enough for me and you. (point to me and you)

Tasty adventures go into a stew, (add items to pot)

Sometimes a dash of poetry, too.

Stir in some songs both old and new.

We're going to make a story stew. (repeat first two lines)

          --Elizabeth Panni

Big books, little books,

Short books, tall;

Thin books, fat books,

I love them all.

When I say ‘library,'-- you say 'card':

Library (card)

Library (card)

I got one today, and it wasn't too hard.

Library (card)

Library (card)

Big stone building,

how sweet it looks,

Library (card)

Library (card)

Takes me on to the land of books.

Library (card)

Library (card)

--chant, by Caroline F. Bauer, abridged

(Sing to: The Lion Sleeps Tonight)

In the library, the ___________ library,

We read a lot of books.

In the library, the ___________ library,

We read a lot of books.

REEEEAAAAD

Read a book when?

Today!

REEEEAAAAD

Read a book when?

Today!

We read a lot, we read a lot,

We read a lot, we read a lot,

We read a lot, we read a lot,

We read a lot.

          --PUBYAC

Library Manners (tune is "William Tell Overture”)

Don't color, mark, nor tear your books

Nor leave them lying in damp, dark nooks.

Washing your hands is good for you

And clean hands help keep books nice too.

Should books get damaged let them be

Leave the fixing to the library!

You can check them out, one by one,

And return them all when you are done.

This Is? (can be made into a flannel board)

This is the card that Scott got.

This is the book checked out on the card that Scott got.

This is the library that lent the book checked out on the card that Scott got.

This is the mommy that read the book that came from the library that issued the card that Scott got.

(I use a copy of our card to hold up to show the kids and any book from your collection will do.)

When you're in the library,

Quiet is the way to be.

Please talk softly,

Make the choice.

Only use your indoor voice.

Libraries are full of joys,

But they can't be full of noise.

          --Alan Katz,

ARE YOU QUITE POLITE

Be careful as this small book ages.

Do not fold or tear the pages.

Treat it gently as can be--

Treat it carefully as can be,

For this book belongs to me.

Here’s a lovely book of mine,

Here’s the cover, here’s the spine.

Here’s some info that is vital:

Author, illustrator, title.

Open it just like a door,

Turn the pages to explore.

When you’re finished, say, “The End.”

And then you close it up again.

The other day

I read a book

about Hats

and you wear them like this.

The other day

I read a book

about Kangaroos

and they hop like this.

The other day

I read a book

about Guitars

and you play them like this.

Read a book! (snap, snap)

Read a book! (snap, snap)

Read a book, read a book, read a book! (snap, snap)

There are books for fun and laughter, there's books for learning too.

Just pick one up and read it, they'll entertain you!

Read a book! (snap, snap)

Read a book! (snap, snap)

Read a book, read a book, read a book! (snap, snap)

(With younger children we clap rather than snap.)

*At the library, I found Five Little Books

Just sitting on the shelf.

I can read them to a friend

Or alone and by myself!

The blue one looks so special

Full of wonder and delight

I think I'll read it with my mom

Before we say good night!

The purple one holds a mystery,

A spooky, scary tale.

There are monsters, ghosts, and goblins

And a witch that likes to wail.

The orange one tells a story

of a lost and lonely pup.

He searches for his family,

And he never does give up.

The green book holds a silly tale

About a big brown bear.

He likes to run around the town,

In just his underwear!

And now we're to the last, little book,

A tale of pirates at sea.

A story of great adventure,

A story just for me!

The library has so many books

I know you can see that it is true.

There are books on the shelf just waiting today,

Waiting for someone like you!

*Five books in my backpack, wish I had more,

I gave one to my friend, and then I had four.

Four books in my backpack, funny as can be,

I gave one to my brother, and then I had three.

Three books in my backpack, exciting and new,

I gave one to my sister, and then I had two.

Two books in my backpack, 'cause reading is fun,

I gave one to my teacher, and then I had one.

One book in my backpack, and I'm KEEPING this one!

(I put some of my favorite books in a backpack and pull them out as we do this one. Expand on this, increase to 10; bring 10 favorite picture books in backpack, or make backpack & books for magnet board.)

*Five little library books lying on the floor.

One was kicked beneath the bed,

And now there are four.

Four little library books, pretty as can be.

One got wet in the bathtub,

And now there are three.

Three little library books, almost good as new.

But someone colored in this one,

And now there are two.

Two little library books, reading them is fun.

But one got chewed by the dog,

Now there is one.

One little library book, left when the day is done.

It got checked out by a child,

And now there are none!

*Five little books, sitting on a shelf

Look inside, and see a little elf

Four little books, all in a row

Look inside, see it start to snow

Three little books, sitting on a shelf

Can you take one and read it for yourself?

Two little books, left on the pile

Find one now and read it with a smile

One little book, all that is there

Found itself a reader who is happy to share.

(For the flannel pieces, I made little books that open and have numbers 1-5 on the front cover.  Inside there is:

5 -- my best approximation of an elf

4 -- snowflakes

3 -- a handprint

2 -- happy face

1 -- another book)
