Programs in MCLS

Irondequoit Public Library (Evans Branch) offers "Book Talk", a twice-yearly (for about 3 months) program for kids in grades 4-6. We work on one book a month, meeting twice: the first time to talk about the book, and the second time to do a project or activity related to the book. We usually get about 15 kids -- a few drop out and a core of 10 or so hang in to the end. As far as choosing what we read, I bring a number of ideas, book talk them, and they decide from among the choices. Some of the books we've read (and related activites) are:

  • Afternoon of the Elves. We built an elf village and displayed it in the children's room.
  • Bridge to Terabithia. We read this just before the movie was released, then went to see the film as a group, and out for ice cream afterwards to compare the book and movie. (We went through lots of kleenex during the movie._
  • The Wright 3. We designed our idea of what a kid-friendly house would be.
  • Pictures of Hollis Woods. We made drawing books and drew pictures from our lives.
