Cancelling Programs

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 5 years, 9 months ago

Do you have a policy (whether official or unofficial) regarding cancelling programs due to low numbers of registrants. Do you have a set minimum number of children who need to be registered? How far in advance of the program do you cancel it? Are patrons aware that programs may be cancelled?

How do you handle?

  • We are a relatively small library, and at the best of times would not usually get more than 15 or so kids at most programs (though there have been exceptions). I'm reluctant to cancel anything, but after a Superhero Party last week with three kids, two of whom were siblings, I feel that now is the time to make a decision about when to cancel. • If there are less than 5, we call and notify the patrons that the program has been canceled. It simply isn't worth the time/salary to go through all the prep for less than 5. This seems to have inspired some families that really want a program to get friends to sign up when they do, just to be certain we have at least our quota to run the program.

We faced a similar problem with one of our performer program. Luckily more children showed up but it seemed like we were going to have only two in the audience. What do you do if the program has a paid performer? -Rosa
