Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. This was suggested at the ALSC webinar, Family Programs on a Shoestring, 7-2011, by Angela Young. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!
INVITATIONS:
REFRESHMENT:
- Sandwiches can be cut out using star-shaped cutters to add to the overall effect of the party food.
- Serve a variety of finger foods, light refreshments—cheese cubes, pieces of fruit, anything with a tempting, fancy toothpick.
- Celebrate with an apple juice toast.
DECORATE:
- Glitter Ball – Christmas ornament on a pole
- Paper Streamers
- Stars
FAVORS/CRAFTS:
- Sparkly art projects
- Glitter hats/crowns
- Masks
- Noisemakers – horns, whistles, paper plate shakers
- Calendars with coloring options for the months, and coloring key to indicate holidays, birthdays, medical appointments, etc.
GAMES:
- PIN—Star in Galaxy, Fuku Wari
- TOSS—confetti OR bubbles (not both)
- FLOOR—Stomp sheets of bubble wrap *THIS has always been a big hit!!!
PROGRAM:
- This really is more of a dance party with music, scarves, have the kids wear colorful, silly socks for the "sock hop.
- Have count down to NOON (drop or raise ball, whichever works best for you)
- Have various stations for crafts & games, if offered.
- If using balloons be mindful of latex allergies. It's been also suggested that you encourage the attendees to keep bouncing the balloons about rather than "grab and snatch."
VOLUNTEERS:
- Get adult help to “serve”
COST:
- Most supplies can be purchased in bargain bins at craft stores or Dollar Stores.
TIME:
- About an hour-and-a-half should be sufficient. (Dependent on the number of families passing through; and how many stations are offered.)
