Topic discussed at J meeting, 10-12-2011."...be careful of providing more than general guidelines unless you have a strong disclaimer. I've had parents be angry at me because the publishers aren't consistent. It's hard to provide information without some people expecting it to be the absolute and final truth. We're a public library, not part of the school system...We can support, but we're not the reading experts." – PUBYAC 4-25-2012

Position Statement on Leveling Books with Reading Levels
For our MCLS community:
Greece has the following sign posted:
An easier way to find easy readers
at your child's reading level
Yellow Dot = Pre-Level 1 & Level 1 (word repetition, simple sentences)
Blue Dot = Level 2 (Reading Independently)
Green Dot = Level 3 (Reading Proficiently)
If you have any questions, please see one of the librarians!
Lincoln has the following sign posted:
Easy Readers
Find the book just right for you. Look on the spine for:
RED DOT
Ready to Read—for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading.
ORANGE DOT
Reading With Help—for children who recognize familiar words and can sound out new words.
GREEN DOT
Reading On Your Own—for newly independent readers who can read simple sentences.
YELLOW DOT
Reading Paragraphs—for children reading more challenging words.
BLUE DOT
Reading Chapters—for children ready for the next step: chapter books.
For non-fiction easy readers, put a colored spine tag on with just basic 100, 200, 300 etc. Adjacent 100s had different colored labels. They are so easy to take care of now and the kids begin to learn that dinosaurs are in the 500s, trucks in the 600s. (PUBYAC 4-04-2012)
