Audience Participation Films

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 2 years ago

Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from PUBYAC contributors. If you’re a member, check out the archives for 4-27-2012. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!

(* Be mindful of the movie's rating and your audience ages)

  • The only way to find appropriate participation things is to watch the movie many times and take notes.
  • Have the library provide all of the props used.
  • Make prop bags for the kids
  • Have a little script that you can pass out with notes on how to act at key scenes. Think of things that you notice, where kids could react, and some scenes that you thought were funny.
  • Have someone at the front of the room with a microphone to tell kids what to do. Even for the Sing-A-Long some people were hesitant to sing out loud so it helped that I was in front to belt it out and demonstrate all the actions.

Suggestions:

  • Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along--In the sing-a-long version the movie dialogue is spoken, but when a song comes up the words appear at the bottom with a bouncing blue dot. (We growled at Beast, booed at Gaston, waved Gaston pennants during his song, waved paper napkins during "Be Our Guest" and blew bubbles when Belle & the Beast kissed. I invited kids to dress up and it was fun.)
  • Frozen

  • Lego Batman--Lego challenges after the movie
  • Little Mermaid--Terika Koch, Storytime Underground, 3-2-2018 "I also did a couple other things--like flashing the lights during the storms, blowing bubbles during under the sea, etc, and spritzing a mist of water during storms and splashing scenes."
  • Muppet Movies
  • Princess Bride--see Sunny Librarian, FB page, too
  • Shrek
  • Toy Story
  • Toy Story 4: See Programming Librarian Interest FB, Stephanie Martin's post 3-27-2022
  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • Wizard of Oz--Sing Along. Pass out song sheets.
