iPads in Storytime

Page history last edited by Jane McManus 3 years ago

It's a brave new world! From social networks to cloud computing, technology has changed the way people connect and communicate. We learn as we grow. Please contribute sites that you think may be helpful to your colleagues. Our thanks to Anne Hicks, (Henrietta), who presented the following at our December 2012 “J” meeting.iPads in Storytime.docx

Media Mentorship & Using Apps in Storytime

iPads and other tablet devices can be used in storytimes the same way we might use flannel boards or puppets. By using appropriate apps we can enrich storytime and make it an interactive experience. Librarians can also use this as an opportunity to model to parents and caregivers how to actively engage with their child while using a tablet. Technology is and will be an integral part of a child’s life. They should engage with it early and in a positive manner.

Some Quick Tips on Finding Apps:

  • Read reviews (BestKidsApps.com)
  • Check for app demonstrations on YouTube
  • Try them out on kids who come into the library!

A few favorites:

  • Feed the Animals by Curious Fingers
  • Wheels on the Bus by Duck Duck Moose
  • Peek-a-boo Halloween by Night and Day Studios, (and other Peek-A-Boo apps by this developer)
  • Robot Lab by Toca Boca
  • Animal Sounds–Fun Toddler Games by Innovative Mobile Apps
  • Nursery Rhymes with Storytime by ustwo
  • Rhyming Words by Grasshopper Apps
  • Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App by Disney (Create you own story, “Big Pigeon" option)
  • SketchMoo2 by Mooofka Ltd (could be used for draw and tell stories)
  • Grandma's Garden by Fairlady Media (“Count the Vegetables” section)
