Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from a PUBYAC contributor. If you’re a member, check out the archives for 11-18-2013. Please add YOUR comments. Your colleagues would appreciate hearing what works, and what didn't!
This is not a program per se, but an on-going offering to promote Every Child Ready to Read. It all starts with scribbles on paper.
Designate a table in the children's room as a writing center. Include
- blank story paper, (lines on the bottom, blank space on the top half for pictures);
- list paper called Words I Found, (where children could write words they found in the library);
- laminated word cards with pictures, (for example, create cards for all different food items so children can make a grocery list; word cards with the names of colors and numbers; and laminated seed packets).
- Keep a binder for future authors and illustrators filled with empty plastic sleeves; when children leave stories or artwork, add them to the binder. The children seemed to really enjoy the writing center.
