DayByDayNY.org – Tonia distributed bookmarks to each librarian from the NYS Library for the website offering young children and families’ daily activities, literacy & health information, reading lists, a public library locator and map of museums.

“Five Key Things You Can Do to Prepare Your Child for School”/Curious George – Pamphlet from Mayor’s Early Learning Council Initiative will be distributed to J Libs along with Curious George books (various titles!) next week. The WXXI Curious George costume can be borrowed as long as it is treated with much TLC and hand-delivered not sent through shipping. Central will use the costume on Monday. If you would like to borrow for your Curious George event, contact Tonia. FFRPL is pursuing a grant to enable a next book distribution.

Summer Reading Camps – David Creek is working to create a proposal by 12/18 to the RCSD for summer of 2015, with the program potentially to be called “Summer Learning Labs.” Encompass (a non-profit tutor program similar to Sylvan Learning) is to do all summer camps in 2015, with training to start in April and teachers to meet with library staff prior to summer. Parents from last year’s program have requested full day programs, but the libraries are not able to function as day care providers, so we are exploring a program to be run in conjunction with the Department of Recreation Youth Services (DRYS). DRYS has expressed interest in creating joint promotional material. David collected input from each branch on the number of Summer Literacy Aides needed, along with possible times for camps to be run at Arnett, Sully, Wheatley, Lincoln, Lyell and Maplewood. Tonia has requested full time funding for Raising Readers effort.

Summer Learning - Tonia recommended the connectedlearning.tv website which gives research that shows you don’t just learn in school. Chicago has implemented a series of badges, as has LinkedIn. To extend learning in the summer, we discussed implementing a signature book to encourage conversations with Heroes in Your Neighborhood (SRP theme tie-in). The tagline “Expeditionary Learning Passport” would help connect to school lingo. ***Action Items***

• Each J Lib to identify a local neighborhood focused program that we could schedule over the summer in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program and let Tonia know your local selection.

• Each J Lib to check with YA Lib to determine how to incorporate SRP for teens.
