Super Hero

Libraries are more than books. Some kids need a little direction to get the creative juices flowing. I gleaned the following from PUBYAC contributors, (2003, 2004, 2009). If you’re a member check out: Super Hero 12-15-2010. Please add YOUR comments. INVITATIONS:  Red, White and Blue

  • FIGHT THE INVASION: Calling all Super Heroes

         (Note: Super heroes can include: Police, Fire and EMT Personnel, as well as military)

 

DRESS:  (Create a Superhero Identity)

  • Come dressed as your favorite super hero or storybook character

 

DECORATIONS: 

  • Red, White and Blue
  • Place easy and effective multi-colored signs around the walls and using a thick felt marker write words: 

         VROOM, BAM, KNOCK, ZOOM, POP, CRASH, POW, ZAP, CRUNCH AND BANG.

         (If using balloons, ask about laytex allergies.) 

 

REFRESHMENTS:

  • Power Punch (lemonade) 
  • Power Vegies (carrots and dip; spinach dip)
  • Barbell suckers
  • Hero sandwiches
  • Cookie Medals 

 

MUSIC: 

  • Themes from various movie & television programs (ie: Star Wars)

 

FAVORS/CRAFTS:

  • Make and take your own superhero badge.
  • Capes--can be made out of black plastic tablecloths. Cut out the # of capes you need and use the rest to cover your tables OR use men's T-shirts (see Pinterest)

GAMES:

  • PIN—Mask/badge on Superhero
  • PASS THE KRYPTONITE: Music stops, if you have the stone you are out! (Can also use a glow stick.)
  • FLOOR

            SUPERMAN SAYS:  Version of Simon Says…

            IRRESISTIBLE FORCE: (WHO IS THE STRONGEST) Mark a line on floor with masking tape.  Sit back to back with opponent so that line runs between them. Using your hands and feet only, try to push your opponent across the line. 

  • RELAY
  • Dodgeball 
  • Super Hero BINGO
  • "Superhero dance" with each child pretending to be the hero of their choice. Turn it into a game of statues by turning off the music at intervals and asking them to freeze into a familiar posture of whatever hero they are imitating. Be prepared for some possible violence as they take out the bad guys.
  • Kryptonite Contamination--small balls of aluminum foil are hidden around the area. Child uses 2 plastic spoons to relocate the kryptonite to the decontamination station.
  • Bean Bag Attack--decorate bags/boxes with pictures of super villains, stack & knock down with bean bags.
  • Super Hero Training Camp--
    • Crawl, roll, jump, climb, run
  • Super testing- Blindfold taste test, careful of food allergies. See books on senses.
    Super hearing-Play sound effects and group guess.
    Super smelling (scratch or sniff objects and guess while blindfolded).
    Super Vision-Enlarge pictures or use mystery pictures and guess what they are.  Or play the memory game.
    Power Portraits-Draw or trace kid's bodies lying down (on mural paper) and have kids draw themselves as superheroes.  Display on walls.
  • SUPER WORD HUNT-Word scramble/crosswords. 
  • IMPOSSIBLE FEATS! Ask Superheros for a challenge see if they have super powers.  Choose a kid, ask him to stand with right foot and shoulder touching wall.  The challenge is to see if he can lift his left foot without moving his right shoulder or foot.  (It's pretty impossible.)
  • Villains have stolen money from the city bank, have a scavenger hunt to find the missing money. (Easter eggs may hold clues.) 

 

PROGRAM:

  • Have various stations for crafts & games
  • Read a book or poems:

               -stories of incredible feats
               -stories about storybook heroes that are super powerful or super smart!
               -stories about the Biggest and the Brightest
               -larger than life stories

             RIDDLES:  Compiled from Joke and riddle books on weight and strength.

VOLUNTEERS:

  • Get adult help to “serve” 

 

COST:

  • Some supplies can be purchased in bargain bins at craft stores or Dollar Stores. 

 

TIME:

  • About an hour-and-a-half should be sufficient.
